Project Plan

While learning about many interesting topics throughout the region of Latin America and the Caribbean this semester, I found the most interesting topic to be religion and religious syncretism. I began diving a bit deeper into the textbook and other academic sources. I will use sources listed below in my step-by-step guide. I am most fascinated by the history of religion in Mexico and the effects of Catholicism on the landscape in Mexico. Throughout my research, I have found lots of research on religion in Mexico, but I plan to truly dig deep on the effects of Catholicism and the spread of Catholicism in Mexico on landscape. I was initially inspired and interested by Exercise 10. Key information that will help me throughout my research is Chapter 9 on religion in Latin America and the Caribbean. My goal throughout this term project is to evaluate the history of Catholicism in Mexico, studying current landscape and pre-colonial landscape. I plan to map out the setups of cities and the relations of buildings to religious structures while calculating the average distances between. I also plan to dive into the beliefs of Catholicism and their effect on landscape. I will be able to complete the steps above before the due date of this term paper because my data and research is available, being that I am studying current landscape features, historic occurrences, and beliefs of a religion. I will not need to conduct any interviews for my research.

1. Using my knowledge and outside academic resources, I will give background information on the Spanish settlement of Mexico, highlighting key features of religious history and religious syncretism in Mexico. (Perspectives on Method and Theory in the Study of Religion: Adjunct Proceedings of the 18th Congress of the International Association for the History of Religions, Mexico City, 1995) -
 2. Using the historic information, I will create a timeline as a visual. I will use Microsoft word as my software to create the timeline. -
 3. I will use data from pewresearch.org to define the prevalence of Catholicism over time. (Pre-colonization and post-colonization, www.pewresearch.org -
4. Using this data, I will create pie charts to visualize the prevalence of religion in Mexico. I will use Microsoft word as the software. -
 5. I will evaluate the religious building placements in comparison to important city features such as schools, markets, city centers, political buildings).
 6. I will evaluate several cities in Mexico (Mexico City, Teotihuacan, and Cholula) to find an average distance between these important city features. (I will find and map this data using Google Earth Pro).
 7. Using my knowledge of the grid city street pattern from the textbook, I will use the data that I find in Google Earth Pro to create a visualization (drawing of sample map using Microsoft Word) that demonstrates the city set-up in the Mexican cities I chose to evaluate, finding links between them. To find these links, I will be researching the cities in Google Earth Pro and finding the similarities and differences. 8. Using information from The Roots of Conservatism in Mexico: Catholicism, Society, and Politics, I will point out common beliefs within Catholicism.
 9. Using this information, I will tie in common beliefs to landscape - Catholic emphasis on family, families living within x distance of each other. I will map this using Google Earth Pro). This data is available in https://www.census.gov/popclock/world/mx
    - Catholic architecture in Mexico found in all sorts of buildings: political, religious, residential, etc. (provide images as examples, using the links in Google Earth Pro).
    - Importance of Bible characters and sacredness of their names (Link names of buildings, cities, businesses) (provide examples and visuals using Google Earth Pro).
 10. I will link all of the steps together to draw a conclusion that displays the great impact that Catholicism and its history has on landscape in Mexico.
